Galapagos Finch Bay

Finch Bay Eco Hotel was the World Travel Awards 2005 winner of ‘Ecuador’s leading resort’.  As soon as you arrive here it’s easy to see why. Reachable only by taxi boat, this secluded paradise resort with no paved roads or motorized vehicles, is situated next to the peaceful Playa de los Alemanes where relaxing your worries away is the standard activity.  Surrounded by an abundance of green vegetation specked with bright flowers of yellow, pink and purple, this place is a fine example of pure Galapagos beauty.  Spectacular views of the turquoise seas greet the eye daily, as white tipped waves wash their foam upon the shores.  Lava lizards scuttle underfoot as you stroll around, tiny Darwin birds sit cheekily at your table as you dine outside in the sun, ducks and herons join you for a swim in the large pool and frigate birds form swooping silhouettes against a clear blue sky.  With only the sounds of rushing waves or chirping birds, it’s hard not to feel at one with nature in this truly tranquil environment. This place just wreaks of luxury.  From the outdoor Jacuzzi that sits atop volcanic rock steps under a canopied area where hammocks hang from the roof, to the pool area with full bar service and the wonderful rooms with private verandas out-front.  Even a few days here would feel as though you’d spoilt yourself.

Dining here is also a nice experience.  Breakfast (if you aren’t a guest at the hotel) costs $22.00 and consists of a large buffet.  Lunch comes as a set menu and also costs $22.00.  Dinner is a la carte and customers can choose from a top quality set menu with a good choice of mouth watering international foods.  The restaurant itself is big and airy, painted in light colours with a high ceiling and wide open doors that welcome a fresh sea breeze.  Tables are covered in starched cloths and laid with clean cutlery and sparkling glasses.  Tall vases sit on the floor filled with palm leaves and pink lilies, and beautiful paintings of Galapagos wildlife hang for sale on the walls.  The bar offers the usual drinks and has a large selection of bottled wines from across the globe.

Twenty-one new looking modern rooms are located to the right of the complex.  These all have a simple light décor and smell amazingly fresh and clean.  The bathrooms are immaculate and soaps, shampoo, flannels and towels are provided.  There are also hairdryers.  Fluffy white bathrobes hang in wooden wardrobes alongside personal safety deposit boxes in which you can store your belongings.  Large windows attract soft daylight giving the space a natural feel, though a small outside veranda with hammock and chairs offers shade enough to keep the rooms cool.  Each is air-conditioned.  Bedding is crisp and white. There are kayaks for hire at the nearby beach and there’s a volleyball net set on sand near the pool.  Staff can organize a myriad of tours around the Island, from diving to bird-watching.
