Hotel Red Mangrove Adventure Inn
Situated at the far end of Avenida Charles Darwin, just five minutes walk from the scientific station, it’s true to say that the Red Mangrove Adventure Inn is probably the most unique hotel in the whole of Puerto Ayora. Painted in bold, striking colours, this ‘Alice in Wonderland’ style residence literally sits under the shade of a red mangrove jungle creating an invigorating natural ambience.
As you walk through it’s arching entrance down the hammock strewn walkway, the first thing you notice, in contrast to the sometimes stifling humidity, is the coolness that covers you like a welcoming blanket. Located right next to the ocean, this place enjoys lively breezes and offers stunning views from the restaurant. Out back is a small pier where red sally light-foot crabs scuttle around whilst marine iguanas lazily bask in the sun.
The twelve rooms here really are something special. Most are named after colours and each one has an individual design and earthy décor. They are modern, spacious, clean and comfortable and all have hot water and private bathrooms. Prices vary depending on the facilities, the amount of people staying in the rooms and whether or not there’s an ocean view. Some also have wireless Internet access.
The Red Sushi Restaurant is another experience altogether. In theme with the whole of the complex, the restaurant sports a décor of fresh bold colours. Big comfy cushions sit on low seats and wigwam like lights stand artily on the floor. Long strips of salmon coloured material drape from the ceiling reminiscent of raw fish. Full length windows provide excellent ocean views and what better place to enjoy the delights of fresh sushi. Open every day until 9pm, the menu offers a great selection of Japanese dishes. Set menus cost $15 (plus tax) and buffet breakfasts are available for $12 (plus tax), but must be booked in advance. There is also a bar where you can order the usual choice of drinks.
All in all, this is a great place to stay. Attention has been paid to every detail and everywhere you look there’s a picture, mural or ornament that pleases the eye. Hammocks hang strewn from posts and it’s pleasant to sit in the comfortable lounge area surrounded by soothing blues and greens and flowered hibiscus bushes.
As the name ‘Adventure Inn’ suggests, various tours including mountain biking, horse riding and kayaking can be arranged here. These need to be booked at least forty-eight hours in advance. Discounted flights are on offer for guests and transport to and from the airport can be arranged.
