EXERCISES AND FITNESS

Galapagos exercises and fitness

With the weather being mainly dry and the scenery beautiful, San Cristobal is a good place to go running. One of the most popular runs is the trail to La Loberia. The track starts to the left of the airport and takes you down a rough path (level but has a lot of loose stones). This is only two kilometres there and back. Alternatively, you could start your run at Playaman and follow Avenida Alsacio Northia all the way to the airport and then to La Loberia. This would add at least another 2km to your journey.

Another nice run would be from El Progreso. Take a taxi for $2 up to the town (or run if you don’t mind running up hill’s) which is situated in the highlands. From there, it’s a seven kilometres downhill journey back to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. This also makes a good walk. Further up the hill is La Soledad a nice point that offers beautiful views of the Island and the sea.

There are some nice short walks around the Island. Frigate bird hill starts at the back of the Interpretation Center. This takes you on a rather rough walk across scraggy rocks until you eventually reach some steep steps (excellent exercise for the legs), with lead you to some good viewpoints. La Loberia is of course another option. Once down the trail, you can cross the beach until you reach some large volcanic rocks, with leads you.

Win you before proceeding as protected wildlife lives here. Along the coastline of the Naval Base is an isolated, peaceful walk and here you can also find the surf spots El Cañon and Tango Reef. It you’re really enthusiastic, you can take a 10km walk to El Junco Lagoon, a fresh weather lake about 100 metres above sea level. The views of this are amazing but make sure you go on a clear day, otherwise the view will be totally obscured by clouds.

The most popular place for swimming is off Playaman beach. Many people enter from one beach and swim to another, as they are not that far apart. You can also swim at Punta Carola and off the rocks at Playa de Oro. There are some other beautiful beaches around the Island but these involve a boat trip, which may be quite expensive.

The main gym is situated in Hotel Miconia (or Cabañas Spa Miconia).

This is a reasonably well equipped gym that costs $1,5 per session. In the morning it opens from 8am until 10pm and there is an instructor to give you advice on how to use all of the equipment. At nigh it opens from 4pm until 7pm. Aerobics classes start at 5pm and finish at 6pm, and also cost $1.50.
