SOCIAL GATHERINGS

If you’re planning to spend a certain amount of time in San Cristobal and are worried about meeting other people then all I can say is “worry not” If you were never a social butterfly before then this is the place to spread your wings as you fly across the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, landing on a myriad of welcoming doorsteps with an offer of food and drink.
Honestly, with so many offers at hand, you will find yourself some weeks dealing with overlapping invites or having to say “no” just so you can have a day to yourself!
I landed on my feet when I arrived here. Out of pure luck I ended up living with Marco Zurita, owner of Iguana Rock bar and fantastic cook. Almost a mother hen, no sooner have the feet of new arrivals touched the ground then he whisks them off to his home to cook up his famous chicken and coke or fresh cerviche.
Before you know it you’ll have been introduced to a whole new group of friends and you’ll feel as though you have lived here for years. His friend Manuel who runs tours from Wreck Bay Diving frequently turns up to barbecues with freshly caught fish and is equally as friendly. Victor from Chalo tours is another famous cook around town!
It really is a good feeling to get together with people from across the globe and learn about their backgrounds. Good friends are made very quickly and soon everyone knows everyone and unfortunately sometimes, everyone knows everything! Once you’re involved in this network of friends, it’s hard to be lonely here.
Last nights barbecue took us to the rooftop of Casa de Nelly, where we enjoyed views of the harbor and a stunning sunset. The Danish medical students brought jacket potatoes with garlic butter, Manuel brought a huge, freshly caught tuna, the German and French project workers brought sausages, the American teachers brought barbecued chicken and the English and Kiwi volunteers provided the alcohol (of course).
It was hard to believe that some of us had known each other for only a week as we chatted and laughed away like old friends enjoying the company. We sat for hours until we finally realized we were cold then headed out to play pool. The next night we were once again together for a pre-party then all headed out for a Halloween costume party at Iguana Rock. The following day we were joined once again for a fantastic all day boat trip with Wreck Bay Diving centre.
As well as this, we’ve enjoyed birthday parties with drinking games, lobster nights and cards nights.
One of the best times we have is when we all head to El Progresso to enjoy a game of football! These games are just about having fun and as long as you can laugh at yourself, you’re guaranteed to have a great time. Although I enjoy my own space, I never seem to get tired of these social gatherings. In this paradise that sits in the middle of nowhere, it’s nice to build a supportive network of friends and it makes life a lot easier.
