BARRANCO BAR

In the daytime, Barranco Bar could easily be mistaken for an old abandoned business, with its’ sun-weathered straw roof and tables littered with leaves.  Located directly opposite the ‘fishermen’ who pull in daily hauls of sea-life, this place sits under a big bushy tree on Charles Darwin Street with a small bar that’s chained up throughout the day.

Surprisingly at night, this place comes alive with cozy low lights and a decent crowd of people.  In fact, being situated next to the ocean, it’s nice to sit outside listening to the rush of waves and breathing in the fresh air, whilst sipping a cold beer.  With relatively cheap drinks and a good selection of modern music, this place is definitely worth a drop in.

BONGO BAR

Bongo Bar is a popular hangout with an excellent pool table and a large screen showing music videos.  Although it’s only small, most nights it attracts a good crowd of locals and tourists who chill out inside at the cozy tables or sit outside on the leafy veranda under low lights, watching the world go by.

Although there’s a good mix of music, normally it’s very loud and sometimes it’s hard to enjoy a chat with friends.  In contrast, the veranda is quieter and has a mellow atmosphere.  There’s the usual range of drinks that cost between $2.50 and $5.00.

This bar is situated on Charles Darwin Street above ‘La Panga’ discotheque (where you can salsa the night away!) and next to La Garrapata Restaurant.  Walk through a small white archway above which is the Bongo Bar sign and up the steps ahead.

LIMON Y CAFE

Sat on a corner, halfway up Avenida Charles Darwin, Limon y Café is a cool bar that’s popular with locals and tourists.  With a mix of modern music always pouring on to the street, this place sweeps you in from the sidewalk to enjoy it’s lively atmosphere.

Once inside, it’s easy to get caught up in the tide of time as you sit watching surf videos on stools at the bar, playing pool on the torn up table or dodging holes whilst salsa-ring on the cement dance-floor.

Once you’ve escaped the night minus sprained ankles from dancing and sampled a few good cubre-libres, you’ll find that this place has you hooked and you’ll be back the next night listening to the early evening chilled out tunes and conversing with the friendly staff behind the bar.

This place has a sort of ‘beach-shack’ feel about it and it’s nice to hang out here under the colourful low lights enjoying drinks with friends.  Prices here are reasonable and are more or less the same as everywhere else in Puerto Ayora.  Definitely worth a visit.

CALYPSO RESTAURANT

Situated at the far end of Charles Darwin street, Calypso Restaurant is a popular place for both locals and tourists and seems to have a regular flow of customers throughout the high and low seasons. Its design is simple yet sophisticated, with the some square tables covered in pastel coloured cloths with a green leaf print spread throughout. Beige Hessian drapes from the ceiling along with the add subtle mobile and walls are painted in delicate peaches and yellows.

Mellow music spills from the speakers and blends with the sounds of the nearby sea making this a truly relaxing place to be. The leaves of palm trees rustle in the breeze as sealions stretch on the beach and crane their necks upwards in the fading day.

The menu is reasonably priced and offers a good range of International and local foods.

There are pizza, pastas, hamburgers, salads and sandwiches, “platos a la carta” and all food is fresh, tasty and is severed on immaculately clean plates. Open early evening to midnight, here you can enjoy fantastic patacones and salchipapas as an after bar snack.
