Day 5
Isabela (Exploration / Hiking)
From Puerto Ayora, you board a fast boat for Puerto Villamil on Isabela Island. Isabela is the largest Island in the archipelago, formed by the merger of 6 shield volcanoes - Alcedo, Cerro Azul, Darwin, Ecuador, Sierra Negra and Wolf. All of these volcanoes except one remain active, making this island one of the most volcanically-active places on earth. Here you visit the Galapagos Rearing Center, to learn about tortoise development and conservation.
You explore the bay in search of the unique Galapagos penguin and follow a trail along the coastline to observe dramatic lava formations and to meet a large colony of sea lions.
The local mangroves and salty lagoons feature the mangrove finch, endemic to Isabela. You can also sight American oyster catchers, herons, flamingos and many other shore species. In the afternoon you are left to enjoy exotic white sand beaches. The evening is spent in this tranquil port town. (B, L)
Day 6
Isabela (Horseback riding)
You’ll begin your day with a 6-mile horseback ride to the very rim of the Sierra Negra volcano. The view from this 6x5 mile-wide caldera is sensational. From here you’ll hike to the puffing Chico Volcano on the northeast side of the caldera.
During your hike you'll have a good chance of seeing finches, flycatchers, Galapagos hawks and short-eared owls. Spend your last evening in this quiet port town before saying farewell to the Enchanted Islands in the morning.
Day 7
Baltra departure
This morning you'll make your way back to Santa Cruz and Baltra Island for your flight back to the continent. (B)
